Macross Zero was good, but not nearly as good as Macross Plus...

This is probably a stupid question, but does this tie into the Robotech series and how and when?

No. It's solely set in the original Macross universe, and doesn't tie into Robotech at all.

Pony: To make a long story short (and you can find more probably on wikipedia if you're interested) Robotech took Macross (and 2 other Japanese series (2nd and 3rd generation)) and "Americanized" them. They created similar stories but tied 3 cartoons that had nothing to do with each other together (the protoculture stuff was the tie-in). As far as I've seen with the 1st generation Robotech - it is very similar in story to the macross, but characters names were changed etc.. I'm sure someone who's a Macross fan can point more out - I started watching but the story was close enough it didn't keep my attention.. I grew up with Robotech so Macross is Robotech Gen1 to me...

Thanks irascible.
I was a big Robotech fan growing up and have all the series on dvd, but if you say these stories are similar I probably won`t bother with the Blu-Ray although it would look cool.

I'd rent it before investing if you can. You'll be saying "Hey! That dude's name is Rick Hunter not Hikaru!"
Did you ever read the books? I thought the author did a good job with the "original" and added after the 3rd generation pretty well.

every one I've asked said that Macross Plus was better than... well maybe I'm thinking of some other Macross movie than Zero, but I heard that the one prior to Macross Plus pissed off all the fans (is that Macross Zero?)

I've never read the books, but I tell you, if they can make a full length feature of Transformers, they damn sure should make a full length feature, live action Robotech movie. I wonder who could play Rick Hunter?

The Robotech novels were great!-

-I'd want the Wachowskis to make the Robotech film. Then, despite not being true to the source material, it'd kick ass.
