Lawrence Kasdan to Pen ROBOTECH

Screenwriter-producer Lawrence Kasdan has another high profile project to focus on in his writing agenda. The man who scripted The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and is currently working on a screenplay for the Clash of the Titans remake (due 2010) has also been confirmed to be penning Robotech, a big screen adaptation of the 80's television series. The original news broke by way of Devin over at Chud.
Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are joining Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello for the Warner Bros. project.

Plot Concept:
A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

With a good script I don't see how this can miss. The original had everything, a love story, alien technology, giant robots or mechas and a mysterious energy source called protoculture. What was science fiction for kids in the 80s is now very close to becoming an integral part of military systems today with robots of all kinds starting to be deployed in the field. In Robotech it was protoculture they were running out of. Today we're running out of oil. Different name, same concept.

Yeah, I love the idea of a Robotech movie and Kasdan can write his balls off. All we need now is a good director. Uwe Boll, anyone?

I kid, I kid!!

Wow great news!

Over the years I realize now a great director is needed for these big movies and it's tricky matching up. Sometimes a new fully trained director is needed that can get with the times. Someone who knows CGI since it's probably going to be needed. I would hate to see Michael Bay end up on this.

Not sure if anybody saw "On the Lot" tv reality show couple years back. But Zach Lipovsky a contestant did pretty good on visual effects and could pull this off with a big budget. He knows all the new techniques.

I don't remember seeing robotech, but I had a toy that looks just like the picture. A jet that turned into a robot.

AWESOME! Hopefully they write with the idea of multiple films and don't try to cram the whole first generation into a 2 hours film. I CANT WAIT! Its way too early to start speculation on who plays Rick Hunter and Roy right?

I'm more excited to find out that a Clash of the Titans remake is being worked on. I had heard rumblings for years, but I didn't know that they actually had someone of his caliber working on an actual screenplay. Now this (Clash) is an example of a remake that makes *sense*. The movie is nearly 20 years old, has outdated special effects and does not have the best acting in the world. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it could definitely use an update. Sweet!

Agreed fft! I never really enjoyed the first Clash of the Titans so I really couldn't have cared less about this one until just finding out Kasdan is writing. Having the man behind both the best Star Wars & Indiana Jones films writing this certainly got my attention. Don't know much about Robotech but I'm suddenly very interested in that as well!

i've been wondering about this project for a while. Does this mean we're all stuck waiting till after clash of the Titans comes out in 2010 to get our first Robotech movie? And hopefully they will be smart enough to NOT have all three alien invasions happen within a to hour time frame.

oh...and would somebody please make a live action Star Blazers already?

Kasdan is King Midas as far as I'm concerned, great to hear he's working on Robotech. I just hope its not the watered down, Americanized version and retains more of the adult themes involved with the original Macross material.

I'm looking forward to an update of "Clash of the Titans" but I have to say, I like to think of Harryhausen's work as "classic" not "outdated". I love the original, love the stop motion work but I'm also interested to see what that world would look like given the CGI treatment. "Let loose the Kraken"!

....second the call for a Starblazers film!

I'll state the obvious: this is the guy that wrote the Empire Strikes Back why the hell wasn't he involved with the prequel trilogy?
