Director M. Night Shyamalan, who's putting the final touches on his R-rated The Happening thriller, has sat down with Empire Online and talked a bit about his upcoming adaptation of The Last Airbender. They took off the "Avatar" name because Paramount didn't want it confused with James Cameron's Avatar 3-D film.

The Last Airbender will hit theaters July 2, 2010.

What? Shyamalan doing a cartoon adaptation?

Really?

He'll probably turn it into a horribly boring thre hour movie with a shocking twist in the end...

Dude sounds like he is on the right track. I don't think this should be hard to do. The genesis is already there.

I have no idea how anyone could complete the first season of the series in one movie without removing part of its essence. Hope that M. Night Shyamalan is able to capture the innocence and beauty of the main characters, while making a palpable dangerous world where the action takes place. The main problem with with Shyamalan's recent movies are that he creates great characters, but fails to place them in believeable worlds and settings. The final result is that the individuals overwhelm the story. In "The Last Airbender", the story takes place in a different but similar world to ours, so it is intrinsical that the backstory is developed along wit the main characters. Also, he has not made any action movies, and for "The Last Airbender" each type of bending is a character on its own. Gotta respect the bending. To everyone I highly recommend watching the animated series. I hope that M. Night Shyamalan outperforms himself.

It is my understanding that there will be three movies to match the three seasons (Water, Earth, Fire). But much of the knowledge from Aang comes from the journey... 20 episodes journey... I would hate if that is eliminated.
